Lena Duchannes

Lena Duchannes is the new girl at Jackson High. She is 15 years old, has long black hair and bright green eyes with a scar shaped in a moon crescent beneath one of them. She has “long and elegant features” and she is always wearing dark clothes with a beat-up pair of black converse sneakers. She has a long silver chain with different things hanging from it, such as a plastic ring, a safety pin and other apparently irrelevant stuff acting as charms, dangling from the chain. Lena is a very smart girl who loves to write poetry and she smells like lemons and rosemary. At the beginning of the year Lena is sent off to her uncle, Macon Ravenwood, who lives in one of the oldest home of Gatlin which everyone think is haunted. In fact, Lena is part of a Caster family and has supernatural powers, which she sometimes has trouble controlling. She is Ethan’s love interest and they both seem to be connected in some strange way.

Ethan Wate

Ethan Wate is a 16 year old sophomore at Jackson High. He is 6’2” and  has dark hair hanging in his brown eyes. Ethan has been playing basketball for his school since he was in 8^th grade and he is a very good player. His dad is a writer and so was his mother, who passed away due to a car accident a year ago. Ethan lives in the Wates’ family home with his dad and housekeeper. He loves to read and is very smart.

Macon Ravenwood

Macon Ravenwood who is Lena’s uncle is considered as the town “shut-in” by everyone in Gatelin. He is referred to as the Boo Radley of the town. Nobody ever say him; he never seems to go out of his house. There is an air of mystery floating around Ravenwood, which is Macon’s mansion. When Ethan first sees him he realises that he is “more of an Atticus Finch”. in fact, he is always neatly dressed in 1942 fashion, with salt and pepper hair. His face is as white as snow and his eyes are dark, with no reflection. 

Macon is technically not a caster but still has powers. In fact, he is an Incubus, which means that he feeds himself with humans’ dreams in order to replenish his strength.

Amma

Amma has been Ethan’s family housekeeper ever since he was a baby. She treats him like her own son and is the authority figure in the house. She practically raised Ethan and he considers her as his grandmother. She’s a very strict woman who is quite opinionated and, although she is barely five feet tall, Ethan would never dare to contradict her. She is always doing crosswords and believes in magic. In fact she does all those magic related things like hanging protections charms everywhere in the house. Amma is the most respected Tarot card reader in Gatlin. She is one of the few people in town to know about the Ravenwood and the fact that they are casters. She personally knows Macon and even meets with him at night to talk about their concerns with Lena and Ethan.

Link

Link has been Ethan’s bestfriend ever since kidergarden. Everybody calls him Link, but his real name is actually Wesley Lincoln. He plays the drum in a band called Who Shot Lincoln and wants to make it a career by moving to New York after graduation. The thing is that his band is really bad, and the chance of him getting any kind of record deal is impossible, according to Ethan. Link is a real jokester and loves to have a good laugh. He is loyal to Ethan and supports him throughout the story. Ethan sees Link as his only true friend.
